Green tea prevents diabetes

Most of us knew the benefits of green tea and now in a recent research its found that Green tea could be useful cure to prevent diabetes. Green tea has several antioxidants that prevent cell death, and possibly even ward off cancer.

Dr. Stephen D. Hsu (Medical College of Georgia in Augusta) and colleagues tested the effects of green tea's predominate antioxidant known as EGCG in laboratory mice with type 1 diabetes and Sjogren's syndrome, which damages moisture-producing glands causing dry mouth and eyes. EGCG also dramatically slowed the development of diabetes in the rodents. At 16 weeks, they found, 25 % of the mice given the green tea compound had developed diabetes, compared to 67 percent of the mice given water. At 22 weeks, 45% of the EGCG group had diabetes, while 78% of the control group did. Hsu and his team also found that the salivary gland cells that were under autoimmune attack were actually multiplying, but EGCG slowed this proliferation. Such rapid cell division has also been shown to occur in psoriasis.

The current study supports earlier research showing EGCG's impact on helping prevent autoimmune disease.

Lung cancer risk

Two genetic variations increase a person's risk of developing lung cancer by up to 60% an international research team reported. The research team has found another gene that raised lung cancer risk and latest finding was relevant for both smokers and non-smokers.

  • Paul Brennan, a cancer epidemiologist at the World Health Organisation's International Agency for Research on Cancer said: "We are looking at differences in the DNA that makes you more or less likely to develop lung cancer".

Lung cancer's ultimate destiny is death and according to the American Cancer Society 975,000 men and 376,000 women die every year by lung cancer. Researchers discovered a region on the 5th chromosome containing 2 genes TERT and CRR9 where they believe variations can boost the likelihood of lung cancer by as much as 60%. Cancer is caused by defects in DNA each time a cell divides, these telomeres become a little more frayed. When they are too worn out, the cell dies. But when cells become cancerous, they produce telomerase, which can renew the telomeres and lets the cells reproduce out of control, eventually to form a tumor. So implicating the TERT gene in a specific cancer can help lead to a better understanding of how cancer develops and boost the design of new drugs to stop tumors, Brennan added.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals showed an impressive ability to knock out the virus in patients for the serious liver disease. In a study its Prove of the previous treatment who have failde with pegylated interferon and ribavirin, 52% of those who received telaprevir saw the virus fall to undetectable levels and remain there 12 weeks after stopping treatment. The percentage with undetectable virus 24 weeks after stopping treatment will yield the critical measure known as (SVR)sustained viral response.

Jason Kolbert, an analyst with Susquehanna Financial Group said: "Efficacy in non-responders is huge. No one should have any doubt about whether this drug works" .

Hepatitis C is a blood borne liver disease that can lead to chronic liver disease, liver cancer, cirrhosis and death. The virus affects an estimated 3.2 million people in the United States alone
and some 170 million worldwide.

In that study, 69% of patients in the telaprevir combination group had the virus fall to undetectable levels following 24 weeks of treatment, compared with a 46% SVR rate after 48 weeks of standard treatment.

Now if looking for the side effects then you seen skin rash and anemia. Several companies are developing potential rival medicines but telaprevir is widely expected to be the first in the market and potential demand of it is increasing.
